Characters that ran into this issue pre-fix sadly will never be able to get through the tutorial swamp. Only way to get through it is by starting a new character. In 0.3 the Nightingale team was able to add a 'Skip Tutorial' feature in the character create. The swamp portal is the very end of the tutorial so you'll not be missing anything by using the skip feature.
