attacked going through first portal, character won't stop injury noises

I just got here so I'm not sure if this is normal or not. I got through the intro bit and opened the portal. Puck warned me that enemies were coming. I turned to look but I didn't get around far enough to see them before they were attacking me. In the scuffle I moved into the portal, and got shifted to Abeyance. Once there, my character began huffing, puffing, and gasping constantly. I'm not injured, and it happens when I'm just standing there.
