While in another realm I filled my companion's inventory with wood, ore, and other items. Upon returning home their inventory was reset to only their equipped items.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
To confirm, have you adjusted your Companion's Inventory and Behaviour settings so that they are not permitted to add resources to fueling stations or building blueprints? Have you also restricted access on any chests or storage structures so that the Companion cannot store their materials?

it has nothing to do with companion behavour or any chests....
If I delete the Respite cairn and don't place any at all, Travel to Respite will also move you to the last position.
It looks like I have to place the cairn and then interact with it to confirm the new position.
Might be possible to have multiple cairns to scare off wildlife (?) and doing this selects which cairn is the respite point?
Did the companion dump the items into a Container that you have marked as accessible by Survivors?
