When a piece of clothing becomes damaged or broken while being worn a corresponding yellow or red icon will be shown on the HUD. When the item is repaired while still in the equip slot the HUD icon is not cleared. To update the HUD the player has to perform some other triggering action like unequiping and reequiping the item or teleporting/realm-walking.
