If the player equips a Maul and hits a tree, they cannot fell it to collect Wood.
A Recruit using a Maul in combat can cut down trees if they happen to hit one while swinging at enemies. Logs are dropped on the ground and can be collected as normal.

Not certain if this could be exploited by fighting near a node with a high gear score you cannot yet harvest with existing tools.
This seems to be the case for ANY NPC in combat, recruited survivor or Aid/Defense NPCs. They are a complete menace on resource nodes if they happen to strike them while fighting. I would like to know how they can mine rocks with an axe, please.
