After assigning my follower to "work here" came back after a few minutes and he was under the ground and couldn't be spoken to, had to TP to next realm to get them back, bit of a hassle at the start of the new update when doing quest line

Same happen to me, i put him to work and he got stuck in the rock in the world's starting tent, but messing with some game options, i discover that if you quit the game, and click to "Return to Respite" option, you will return to your assigned Estate Cairn. If you put this Estate far away from spawn in a plain area, you reset the recruit position to your Estate's position. This can be a temporary solution until they fix this.
Same exact thing happened to me in the starting realm, I would have classified the impact as play impacting though since having your follower "assisting" in fights and with carrying loot is extremely beneficial.
