As the title mentions, there seems to be a conflict in design choice between these two buildings.
The estate cairn allows you to access items across your entire base and acts as a teleportation beacon between realms. Its defining role is to act a central point from which you start any adventure, and where you return when your inventory is full of you have exceeded your weight limit. Its purpose and function is very clear.
So the question becomes: what purpose does Pepys box serve other than to convolute the process of concluding and starting an adventure. This building seems to only be an unnecessary step in an already established system.
One potential solution: Now if Pepys box had an essentially unlimited inventory space then it could fulfill a purpose of acting as a distinctive waystation, and due to its bottomless space the ability to pull items is so difficult and complex that it justifies its existence is a storage building that cannot be pulled from when building or crafting.
Recommendation: Remove Pepys box all-together, make the estate cairn's inventory significantly bigger (to compensate for the removal of Pepys box, but not so much that upgrading the estate cairn does not leave so much empty space in later tiers of the building) and have it be accessible between realms with a limit to 1 for each realm or 1 per tier of building. Limiting it to one means it cannot be abused as a mobile chest and does not fundamentally change the way the game is current played within a single realm. If you want it to be thematic you can request that players make the new estate cairn out of resources from the new realm as if it needed to be 'attuned' to that realm for the link to be established.
Motivation: As a relatively new player to Nightingale, without having pre-read the tier 2 - 4 upgrades of the estate cairn I had an intuition that it would act as a global inventory space. I was completely taken back by the fact that I had zero access to my first estate cairn's inventory when I loaded into my second realm and built a second estate cairn. I could not understand why since the first estate cairn acted as an effective global inventory system in my first realm. Seeing that I had to first unlock Pepys box, that it would not have the same 'pulling from storage' as the estate cairn only left me with a taste of confusions to why I was seemingly purposefully inconvenienced by an unnecessary step. The fact that the devs have a system in place where resources can be transferred between realms yetchose to put so many barriers was dumbfounding.
For the sake of making players desire to set up unique, thematic bases in each realm and have the convenience of not needing to unnecessarilly go through loading screens to access resources should be a priority for you as the developers. If a player can perform an action (put resources in Pepys box, transfer realms, take resources out of Pepys box, go back to previous realm, repeat) but it takes an unnecessary amount of steps, what reason is there to not simplify this process as much as possible?
