Illumination is still very dim since the update increasing light brightness, and like all lights it doesn't reach/illuminate very far from its source.
Increasing the intensity and radius would make the spell more useful, even worth having. Currently it's just something to take up an enchantment slot to increase tool level, and since it doesn't follow you is less useful than even a basic/crude torch. Illumination requires constantly re-casting to move it along, which eats up tool durability, whereas a torch is held and keeps the area around you lit and is much cheaper to repair for how much use it gets.
An additional use for Illumination would be as an actual light source to provide the "Well Lit" bonus, giving players another reason to have a tool with it; "Well Lit" should also be applied from player-held light sources like the torch or various lamps, since they do provide sufficient lighting to wherever you are.

I absolutely agree with the poster that the illumination spell needs a major buff.
As it's quite a humble spell anyway, in that it only makes light - make it impressive! When casting the spell it should add a lot of light!
Also, more control on the placement of the light source would be nice - perhaps something like holding down right click and then using the mouse wheel to change the distance between the point where the spell is cast and the player - and then the spell is cast when the player releases right click.
