Specialized storage furnishings to reduce clutter and increase decorations

Currently with so many types of materials, players are creating arrays of storage to try to keep it organized. This results in trying to have a lot of storage with a compact footprint, while also mousing over each identical looking container for the correct name to figure out what they put inside.

OPTION A:

I recommend specialized storage furnishings that clearly hold what players expect them to hold, and in unlimited quantities, but only accepting those items that they should have.

Examples:

  • Ore Cart -- this would hold unlimited stacks (types) of Ore but it will only accept Ore. The player can quickly recognize where to go to stash their ore with a single transfer click. They can also reasonably place it within proximity of a smelter as an appropriate furnishing for the location.

  • Small Fruit Tray - This small item can only have one stack and it must be a type of Fruit. Whatever fruit is place inside will also become visible on the tray.

  • Herb Rack - This shelf with an array of jars holds any number of herbs and seasonings.

  • Wood Pile - This holds unlimited stacks (types) of unprocessed wood.

  • Ammo Box - This holds unlimited stacks of ammunition.

OPTION B:

The only player storage is a "Storage Shed". The player can have any number of storage sheds and they can come in different designs (e.g., one design per housing tileset), but they are all linked to a single central storage depot. The player can continually upgrade it to have more storage slots. Everything can go inside. Recruits cannot remove things from the Shed but can unload into it from their Inventory.

Different furnishings look at this Storage Shed with a Filter. Recruits can add to the Shed through a furnishing but cannot remove from the furnishing.

  • Ore Cart - When you open the Ore Cart to look at it, you see only different types of Ores that are in the Shed. From the Ore Cart you can add/remove only Ores to/froom the Shed.

  • Wardrobe - When you open the Wardrobe, you see only gear you can wear.

Furnishings that are containers have their own storage and Recruit permissions, This allows Recruits to take items and use them, e.g., to add fuel to crafting stations.

The game desperately needs something like this, far more than I think people realize. Nightingale has a huge array of different crafting materials and item types, even compared to other survival crafting games, and trying to deposit a haul after a run is a finicky, painful mess that often puts me off of playing when I'd otherwise want to, and has caused more than one of my friends to bounce off the game early on. Simplifying and streamlining storage would help with this immensely, and is one of several key things that I genuinely believe will help retain new players by reducing frustration and pain points in the early game.

As far as how your suggestion in particular works, I think option B is the better one. I have a 'building' chest that I often move around depending on where in my estate I'm trying to build, to make sure a supply of building materials is always within range. Option A doesn't allow for this, while option B would enable it simply by building another storage shed in the area we want to build next, which could be demolished later if need be.

The RP of that is interesting, however, for those of us who enjoy having a library array of material components. what we need is visual signs for each of those baskets or boxes. A visual label would decrease the amount of mousing over for those of us who have not fully alphabetized the library yet.

      I like your option A.
FYI the Nouveau Cabinet is storage and I use it as a wardrobe.
