Hello all! This feedback and suggestion come at the back of one my fellow Realmwalkers doing their best to remain competitive and useful while focusing on Firearms.
I have identified several key issues with Firearms, each of them being a not too difficult thing to change. The sum of these issues however makes Firearms currently uncompetitive and vastly underwhelming.
Ranged weapons overall suffer from heavy limitation in ROF; crossbows, blunderbusses, and bolt-action rifles need to be reloaded after each shot and the reload takes a very long time. Enough time, in fact, for the enemy to reach you even from a moderate distance. The same is true for fully drawing a longbow; the time it takes is simply too long.
At the same time, shotguns and lever-action rifles suffer from major damage gap which they can't make up for by the shorter reload time. While I can understand the intent of balancing out ROF vs Damage, it doesn't scale well because both are currently underwhelming.
This is coupled with another issue of Firearms and Bows, which is their single-target damage. There are Charms that allow melee weapons to cleave multiple enemies in one hit. There are Enchantments that allow melee weapons to do the same as well, e.g. Shockwave. Neither of them is, however, applicable to a Ranged weapon.
Which brings us to another issue of Ranged weapons - their lack of Enchantments. I understand it to be a challenge to combine Enchantment Selection with Reload/Ammo Selection in the current system. The keybind [R] serves both purposes, which is the cause of this problem.
There are a couple of solutions I would propose to address this issue; I am aware that your Game System Architect will probably groan and facepalm when reading some of these, but please just take it as an input from someone who's seen the struggle in practice. Spreadsheets are nice and cute but they're no match for real practice.
Buff the Firearms ROF
Both Bolt-Action and Lever-Action Rifles ought to have a "cartridge" or another ammo holder (look at Henry's Repeating Rifle from 1860). The reload time for Lever Action should be pretty much instantaneous while the Bolt Action's reload time ought be significantly lowered from what it is now.
Both Bolt and Lever Action would still need longer time to replenish the cartridge, but their viability in combat would get boosted.
As for Blunderbuss, its purpose is very short range "in your face" massive damage, as a sort of "last resort one-shot", I'm not asking for anything but a slightly shorter reload there.
And finally, the damage tradeoff vs ROF ought to be a little less steep as well; currently the higher ROF or larger cartridge just can't make up for the difference.
Enable Enchantments for Ranged Weapons
This is the big one. Right now, Ranged Weapons feel like the unwanted ginger kid of all the weapons. Some work will need to be done to allow this, namely separating the action key and UI for "Reload/Ammo Select" from "Spell Selection".
Most existing Enchantments should be made available for Ranged Weapons, too. Obviously, Oberon's Bounty on a Rifle doesn't make sense but Recovery, Track Legend, Hermetic Flame, Shockwave, Beast's Instinct, Summon Swarm, Ring of Empowerment, Assassin's Sight, etc - they most definitely do.
Thank you! :)
