I finally found salt (only 3). I was going to cure some meat, but the cooking station would not recognize the fact that I had salt in my inventory, so I could not cure the meat.
Add on: So part of the problem is you have to take the mineral (salt), and turn it into a Spice(salt). Not intuitive at all. Then, to make matters worse, once you have spice as a salt, the refined mortar station won't recognize it as salt to refine it. It won't recognize the mineral (salt) either. The cooking station doesn't recognize either version as salt, so I still can't cure meat.
