Information about materials and monsters is a fairly important aspect of the game, and many often call for things like additional wikis etc to be created. This option seems inevitable, but I think it a shame to have a tertiary site used as reference given logistics issues, and the fact that I wouldn't be playing the game, if I were looking things up on wikis etc. I'm also not overly fond of excessive in-game menus/manuals, for similar reasons (doesn't feel like you're playing).
I'd like to see the issue of detailed information about objects/materials etc be handled through additions to the building system: museam like display cases.
Various implementation options I imagine, but something along the lines of:
Different qualities/shapes/sizes of cases, offering more/less detailed information
In addition to basic tooltip type info, items could show information such as: common areas the object is found, color patterns that it produces when used in crafting, or more verbose mechanic descriptions for things like "increases fishing rating".
Museam / Display cases, to show off weird finds from around the world, I think would fit well within the setting. Using them to also provide helpful information for players would encourage players to build more, and make the "guide book" more interactive / immersive.
Heck, it'd be cool if a system like that could/would replace the current guidebook/codex system. Outside of basic gameplay, information in an exploration/survival/crafting scenario ought to be more organically created / tied to character progression, in my opinion at least.
