Agreed - while they don't take up space typically, the items that are equipped aren't indicated as such, and on the companion, they absolutely take up space in their bag, and they aren't impacted by carrying a backpack. I'm fine if they lock the amount of slots for companions since they don't have weight limits, but let me have them have a cute backpack on without taking up extra spots that, as stated, shouldn't be in their bag.
Equipped items already don't take up bag space. They are only displayed as part of your inventory when accessing storage items. But perhaps a good way to reduce confusion is the visibly separate equipped items from personal inventory in the UI.

Still voted, don't think the issue is the space but it should have a filter to stop showing equipped items when transfering something to containers.
