Player Hosted Servers

Player-hosted servers are now available as part of our winter update. You’ll see two new options when starting the game: Host a Friend and Connect to a Friend. When connecting to a friend, you’ll be able to use your profiles from offline mode to connect to their game.

Currently we only support direct IP connections, so if you are hosting you will probably need to forward a port through your firewall. We understand that may be tricky for some of our players, and we hope to improve this flow over time.

Connect to a Friend:

  1. Select Connect to a Friend and enter their IP address, port(and password if set).

  2. Choose your profile, or create a new one.

  3. Play as expected, except the host will need to approve traveling.

Host a Friend:

  1. Select Host a Friend and enter the port number(and password if you want) for other players to connect.

  2. Confirm the settings and choose or create a character.

  3. Share your IP address and port with connecting players (you can find your IP via tools like https://icanhazip.com/).

  4. If players are connecting from outside your LAN, forward port 7777 (or your selected port) on TCP and UDP from your router to your PC. Port forwarding guide.

Troubleshooting:

Networking details:

Nightingale uses both TCP and UDP on the port that you specify, so if you are forwarding ports, you will need to forward port 7777(or if you change this, what you have set it to) on TCP and UDP.

Example:

A PC behind a router on a residential internet connection.

  1. Find your computer's local IP address. Instructions here

  2. Forward port 7777 for TCP and UDP from your router to your local IP address. Instructions here

  3. Visit https://icanhazip.com/ to get your external IP address.

  4. Tell your friend to use the IP address from step 3.

  5. Launch the game.

  6. Choose Host a Friend and Accept the defaults.

  7. Select your profile and resume the game.

  8. Your friend should now be able to connect to your game.

A PC on the same network as a family member, or on a LAN

  1. Find your computer's local IP address. Instructions here

  2. Tell them to use the IP address from step 1.

  3. Launch the game.

  4. Choose Host a Friend and Accept the defaults.

  5. Select your profile and resume the game.

  6. Your friend should now be able to connect to your game.
