In a different post, I mentioned adding more combat value to basic offhand tools to further incentivize actually having them use an offhand slot, but another way to help approach the issue of these tools taking a slot on the hotbar while being so fundamental is to just simply remove the need for them to be in the hotbar. Adding 3 simple item slots in the inventory screen (one for the umbrella glider and one for the lantern) that allow input-based usage would mitigate this dilemma entirely. Pressing jump while in the air could deploy the umbrella equipped in your bonus slot for it, while pressing back/cancel would stop the glide and switch back to your equipped items (to make those glide-then-grapple maneuvers easier).
For lanterns, the simplest fix would be to have it be equippable to your waist or backpack and then add a button prompt in the offhand wheel menu that closes the wheel and toggles your lantern light. I know that somewhat mitigates the value of the "illumination" spell, but that value can be reimplemented by making the spell give extra crit chance on illuminated creatures and then extending range of light and range of placement so you can use the spell to light up distant spaces.
The other item I have qualms with is the spyglass, but a similar item wheel input method could be utilized for that as well.
To incentivize the use of these offhand items, making any new functions added to the umbrella or lantern only available if held in hand from a hotbar slot would help motivate players to use these items as offhand combat tools. Another solution would be to make it so the stat buffs and charms on these items only work if the item is held in hand from a slot as well (perhaps with the exception of the umbrella speed charm).
